Ordering

Why two minutes? Why not a 20 minute video?

Two minutes is what a family watches all the way through, together, on the day. The tribute usually lands on a phone in a room full of people. That's long enough to cover where they went and what they did, and short enough to get forwarded to every cousin. A 20 minute film tends to get saved for later.

How far ahead should I order?

More than 10 days ahead is $99. Rush is $150 from 5 to 10 days out, and last call is $300 from 2 to 4 days out. Ordering closes 2 days before the date, or sooner if that date reaches 100 tributes.

Plan early for Veterans Day. Orders open 90 days ahead, so order as soon as they do. See every date and its order-by day.

Does it have to be a holiday?

No. Birthdays, retirements, anniversaries and homecomings all work, at the same prices. Tell us the date and we build to it.

Can one tribute cover two people?

Each tribute is about one veteran. If two people in the family served, that's two orders.

Is Service Honored part of the VA or the military?

No. We're a private business with no connection to the National Archives, the VA or any branch of the military.

Can I cancel?

A pre-order, yes: cancel up to 10 days before the date and we refund it in full. Rush and last call orders go into production right away and can't be cancelled for a refund. If we miss your date or the tribute never arrives, you get your money back on any order. How refunds and remakes work.

Their DD-214

What do I need before I order?

Their DD-214, as a phone photo or a scan, and up to 10 photographs. Then a few sentences about them, typed into the order form or sent as a voice memo.

I don't have their DD-214.

The National Archives sends a copy free to the veteran or next of kin, and the request takes about ten minutes. It can take a couple of months to arrive, longer for older records, so start now if you're aiming at a date. The DD-214 page shows you the fastest way to ask.

Will you get the DD-214 for me?

No. The record is free from the National Archives, and no private company should charge you for it. Older files carry a copying fee that you pay to the government directly. Find the fastest way to request their record.

They served before 1950.

The paperwork had a different name back then. The DD-214 page lists the older forms by branch, and we work from those the same way.

Their file was lost in the 1973 fire.

The fire destroyed many Army files from before 1960 and Air Force files from before 1964. Contact us before you order. We look at alternate documents case by case. See which records burned.

Can it be a surprise?

Yes, if a copy of their DD-214 is already in the house. If you have to request one and the veteran is living, the request needs their signature, so they may figure out something is coming.

You approve a proof first, then it goes straight to them on the day. If you'd rather hand it over in person, give us your own email as the delivery address.

Does the veteran have to be living?

No. Next of kin can request the record, and the tribute is made the same way.

What about the Social Security number on the form?

The order page has you cover it on your own screen before you upload. Only the covered copy is sent. If any part of it still shows when the file reaches us, we cover it before anybody reads the file. We never use it.

Photographs and stories

How many photographs can I send?

Up to 10 go into the tribute. If you send more, tell us which ones matter most.

My photographs are old, faded or damaged.

That's fine. A phone picture of a print works. Every photograph is cleaned up and color corrected before it goes in.

Will you make the photographs move?

No. We move the camera across the photograph and leave the person in it alone. The tools that make an old photo blink or smile give them a movement they never made.

What should I tell you about them?

Start with why they joined and who they came home to, then add the story that always got told at the table. A few sentences is plenty.

What if their name is hard to say?

The order form asks how to say their name, the family's names and their hometown. Spell it the way it sounds, or send a voice memo of you saying it.

Can you leave something out?

Yes. The order form has a place to list anything you don't want mentioned. We leave it out, even when it's on the record.

Do you check our family's stories?

No. There's nothing to check them against, so we write them down the way you tell them. Service facts are different. Those come off the form, and if the record doesn't support a line, the line doesn't run. A rank, unit or medal that appears only in a family story stays out.

Will it say which battles they were in?

Personnel records don't say who was in which fight, so we don't either. We tell you where their unit was and when.

The tribute

Do I get to see it before they do?

Yes. When the tribute is ready, we email you a link to a private proof on our site. It's marked PROOF and plays only on that page. Approve it, or send us a note about anything we missed and we fix it and send a new proof.

Pre-order proofs are ready at least 5 days before the date, rush proofs at least 2 days before, and last call proofs the day before. Approve it or send changes by 6 p.m. Pacific the day before the date. We remind you twice before the deadline, the last time that morning. If we haven't heard from you by then, we send it on the day as it stands.

How does it arrive?

The morning of the date, they get an email from us with the tribute at the top. One tap plays it. The same email has a link to download the video file and a link they can share or post anywhere they like. You get a copy that morning too.

Can I share it?

That's up to them. The share link in their email works for anyone who has it, so they can keep it in the family or post it on social media. We never post a tribute anywhere ourselves.

What if something in it is wrong?

Tell us within 30 days and we fix any fact the service record settles: a name, a date, a rank, a unit, a decoration. We don't re-cut the film to a different taste, swap photographs or rewrite lines that are already right.

Why only 30 days for corrections?

That's how long we keep your paperwork. Once it's deleted, there's nothing left to check a correction against.

What happens to the DD-214 and photographs afterward?

We delete them 30 days after the tribute is delivered. The privacy policy has the details.
